Maj. Gen. James E. Smith is the Commander of Space Training and Readiness Command, headquartered at Patrick Space Force Base, Florida. As Commander he is responsible for preparing the U.S. Space Force and more than 14,000 military and civilian Guardians to prevail in competition and conflict through innovative education, training, doctrine and test activities.  Originally from Boise, Idaho, he commissioned in 1997 and his career spans numerous space operations and acquisition positions. He has commanded at the squadron, group, wing, garrison, and now at the Field Command level. His 29 years of service have seen him lead units around the world including in Afghanistan, Iraq, and multiple locations across Europe and the continental U.S. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, MIT and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy in Washington D.C.
